Virginia College on Jacksonville’s south side hosted “Bring A Friend to School Day 2017” on Wednesday, June 7th. Currently enrolled students were given the opportunity to bring a friend or family member to class with them to tour the campus with the hope that the college will attract new enrollees. Students across several disciplines were excited to bring their loved ones to the campus and showcase their talents. The atmosphere was cheerful as students, faculty, and members of the community participated in the day-long event. Each guest has a brief meeting with the campus president, Don Slayter. He then tours the campus with them, exposes them to the many programs available at Virginia College and responds to inquiries surrounding a student’s overall experience.

Ms. Nakayla Blue is enrolled in the cosmetology program and cited how much she appreciates the opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment that affords her the chance to interact with real clients. Ms. Leah Gray, also a student held a different perspective about what she enjoys most about Virginia College. For her, the small intimate classes continually make her feel valued. She remarked on the professionalism of the faculty which she firmly believes keeps the best interests of all students a priority. Program Director of the Cosmetology Program, Ms. LaMarion Jones stated exposing the students to both the technical and retail side of the business is an effective method for long-term student success in their careers long after graduation. The goal, she shared is to grow their client base while honing their skills so that each student, no matter their discipline is able to meet and exceed the demands of the market. The school offers salon services from Monday to Friday at reasonable rates. Although the students are rendering the services, their work is supervised by a licensed instructor.

Virginia College was founded in 1983 in Roanoke, Virginia and accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges (ACICS).
