The Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission elected new leadership and made plans for public review of the Corridor’s Management Plan at its first 2012 quarterly meeting in Jacksonville, Florida on February 24.
Ronald Daise and Dr. Althea N. Sumpter were named Chair-Elect and Vice Chair-Elect and will take office June 1st at the second quarterly meeting, in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Both are natives of St. Helena Island, SC. Commissioner Daise (pictured) represents South Carolina and serves as Vice President for Creative Education at Brookgreen Gardens, in Murrells Inlet, SC. Daise, along with his wife Natalie, starred in “Gullah Gullah Island” the award-winning Nick Jr. TV show of the 1990s.
Commissioner Sumpter represents Georgia and teaches Digital Media Production at The Art Institute of Atlanta.Returning officers are; Charles H. Hall (GA), Secretary, and Ralph B. Johnson (FL), Treasurer.
“The Corridor’s Management Plan will soon be ready for public review,” Daise said. “It has been a long process, but we have been guided by public feedback about how this unique and
significant National Heritage Area should be managed. We invite potential stakeholders and partners to join with us to celebrate and preserve a living culture that has impacted the world community.”
