Mother’s Day Comedy Brunch for Historic Church Rehabilitation

Jacksonville, Fla. – The Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church will host a Mother’s Day Comedy Brunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday May 8th at Old St. Andrews in downtown Jacksonville. Comedian Belynda Cleare will host the event. The $100 cost of attendance includes buffet, drinks, and entertainment. Tickets are available on Eventbrite at the following URL: Mother’s Day Live Comedy Brunch Tickets, Sun, May 8, 2022 at 11:30 AM | Eventbrite. Funds raised from ticket sales will go towards renovation costs.

The fundraising event is made possible through Mt. Olive A.M.E.’s partnership with the Jacksonville Historical Society (JHS). Last year the JHS Historic Sites Committee placed Mt. Olive A.M.E. on its list entitled “Jacksonville’s Endangered Historic Properties.” Mt. Olive A.M.E. is one of 17 historic structures on the list besides Wesley Manor and the Old Duval County Armory.  The Church was established and operated as a brush arbor just five years following the emancipation proclamation. In 1922, Architect R. L. Brown constructed the church in the Romanesque Revival style. The cathedral is like no other and has an 1880’s pipe organ that is fully intact.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Jacksonville Historical Society,” said Pastor James Cleare. “Our partnership will give an opportunity to share how Mt. Olive A.M.E. has been a major conduit for social change in Jacksonville since the late 1880’s.”

Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church was founded by prominent African American luminaries and historical figures such as A. L. Lewis and Richard L. Brown. Mt. Olive A.M.E.’s mission is to minister to the social, spiritual, and physical development of all people.
