Viewers of Oprah’s Next Chapter on OWN who expected to get a glimpse of Cissy Houston’s book chronicling her life with her late daughter were floored when her son Michael joined the interview and confessed to being the one who introduced his sister to drugs back in the 80’s.
After giving Oprah Winfrey a tour of her New Jersey home, discussing Whitney’s childhood and what getting the call that she died was like and even touching on her estranged relationship with Whitney’s daughter, Houston’s smiles turned to tears when Michael came on the set and stated that
he felt he was responsible for Whitney’s death.
He added that he had contemplated suicide several times as the result of his own drug addiction. He said he taught his sister to drive, they played together and eventually did drugs together. He told Oprah that back in the 80’s drugs was acceptable in the entertainment industry and it wasn’t a bad word like it is now. He also felt responsible for letting it get so far.
“We were travelling, we were on the road we were young in our late 20’s, we had money and we just got caught up,” Michael said.
The show was followed by Oprah’s last interviews with Whitney. Before airing the shows, Oprah stated that she was in Kingsland, Georgia filming a new project when she got word of the beloved star’s death. Michael’s revelation came after years of public speculation that Whitney’s ex-husband Bobby Brown was the one who introduced the late singer/actress to drugs.
