Pearl Street between Union and State streets closed this weekend

Jacksonville – Pearl Street between Union Street and State Street is scheduled to close Saturday at 6 a.m. and reopen Sunday by 7 p.m. (April 2-3) to allow for drainage work at the southeast corner of Pearl and State streets.

Northbound Pearl Street traffic is detoured to Union, Julia and State streets. Southbound traffic is detoured to State, Clay and Union streets (see detour map below). Double lane closures on State Street west and east of Pearl Street will be in effect during the same time.

The road closure, weather permitting, is part of the $13 million Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) State Street, Union Street and Mathews Expressway resurfacing and improvement project.

Local resident celebrates 103rd Birthday on Sunday

fannieFannie Mae Garner, who was born February 7th, 1913 in Hawkinsville, Georgia, will celebrate her 103rd birthday on Sunday, Feb. 7th.

Mother Garner is a faithful member of the Greater Friendly Missionary Baptist Church, where she will be celebrating this momentous occasion with friends and family.

Founding member of Earth, Wind & Fire dies

Maurice White, the founder and lead singer of Earth, Wind & Fire, has died.

White died at home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, said his brother, Verdine White. He was 74.

A former session drummer, White founded Earth, Wind & Fire in the late 1960’s. The group went to sell more than 90 million albums worldwide.

White was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in the late 1980’s, which led him to eventually stop touring with Earth, Wind & Fire in 1994. However, White retained executive control of the band, and remained active in the music business.

Florida caregiver arrested for stealing from elderly residents

A 30-year-old Florida woman was arrested who stole $12,000 in cash and jewelry from residents of the assisted living facility where she worked.

Melissa Taylor, admitted to stealing from multiple residents over the past several months. According to Taylor, since October 2015, she stole a diamond ring, gold chains, cash and a gift card from five separate victims who were all over the age of 80. Taylor said she traded and sold the stolen jewelry for money to pay her utility bills.

Taylor, is charged with five counts of theft from a person 65 years old or older. She was released Monday evening on $7,500 bond.
